Thule Residence Complete Rooms  (Safari-room)

"We would definitely use motorcaravanning again, your customer service is first class" T&AW.

Residence 'G3' Generation-3 is now priced and supplied as a complete room with sides and front.
Suits 4900-5003-5200-6002-6200-6900-8000-9200 & fits earlier 5002/5500 with a transformation kit.

Safari-Residence / Safari Rooms / Thule Tents:  If you get lost here please do ask us for help in specifying a room kit to suit your vehicle. The number of possible room variants is quite large and getting the room spec wrong or the wrong room components on the wrong awning really will develop into a major headache - we know, we're asked to sort many out! So if needed, please do to ask for help and advice over rooms - it's one of the services that sets us apart!  Do read on first to see if we've provided all you need to work it out yourself but do email any questions using one of the email links above or below. Please note 'to fit MH XYZ' doesn't work, you do need to collect together accurate information about your own awning code, awning box length & mounted height/s!  See the "What do I need?" paragraph below.

Named colours now discontinued, all are now in Thule's standard Grey with black & white trim

Looking for Panorama?  Coming soon but Ducato version already online here (click)

Safari G3 Residence:  with Residence already a best selling range, the new G3 Residence introduced in 2017 continues to build on the success of the earlier 'G2' with its more modern, clean, good looking, 'timeless', and very stable design with very large clear windows - evolved from Omnistor's very successful 'Safari-room'. Side windows roll up independently of the mosquito screens, the front window does not open but the whole front panel rolls up. A front panel bead allows extra front panels like sunshades to be attached to the room. A new double rubber flaps seal the room to the vehicle side. Mudwall flaps can be tensioned inside or outside. The entire Safari design, construction and bracing was reviewed for this new product and as a result the new G3 Safari-Residence is an exceptionally stable system. The fabric is top quality and includes welded seams in the most demanding sections where extra strength is required. Colours are the now usual Thule grey with black and white trim.

Notes: 1. Residence is only for flat sided vehicles, for curved sided vehicles like the Ducato Van you must use a Safari-Room or Panorama or Quickfit instead. 2. G1/G2/G3 are not mix and match, you can't partially upgrade older rooms, you do have to have G3 sides with a G3 front (& transformation kit for old awnings).

What do I need to know?  First obtain some information about your awning and how it is mounted. You'll find information about your awning model, colour and box length on the internal labels, the one on the back of the front rail is easiest to read but there is another with a long bar code number in the back of the box somewhere. Next you need to do some measuring  - so arm yourself with a decent steel tape plus steps/hop-up and your reading glasses(!) and measure the 'mounted heights'. These are taken from ground to the underside* of the mounted awning box, take one measurement at each end because they often differ even when the awning looks level!  Finally not always needed but while on those steps you might as well complete the job ... lastly erect the awning fully-out but at the minimum front height to allow the caravan door to open freely and fully without fouling and then measure the "front height". This is from ground to the underside of the front rail. All this information will be used to ensure you get the right room fit for your particular vehicle including the roof slope, we will need / ask for this info when you place an order.  *The underside of the mounted box used to measure mounted height for wall mounted awnings is fairly obvious but for roof-mounted awnings like 6300 / 6200 / 6002 / 9200 it is the underside of the front lip that is used as the reference point. PS: If you have to measure rather than read, length = box length not fabric length.

Residence is only for flat sided vehicles, for curved sides as on Ducato & Sprinter Vans you must use a Safari-Room, for Ducato there is a dedicated Ducato Safari-Room or Panorama or Quickfit.

Mounted Height Reference:  Small = 2.15 - 2.30m : Mdm = 2.30 - 2.45m : Lge = 2.45 - 2.60m : 'SML' are often grouped together : XL = 2.60 - 2.75m : 2XL = 2.75 - 2.90m : 3XL = 2.90 - 3.10m : Front height is 1.85m for S/M/L sizes then rises to 2.05m for XL size and 2.25m for 2XL & 3XL sizes. Due to roof slope you can't mix & match, so XL goes with XL etc. NB: When fitting for the first time it is well worth first erecting the front to be at the spec height to go with the rear height purchased - saves a lot of bother later on.

All this suits most vehicles but there are special order rooms with a shallow roof slope to cope with low vehicles with high doors where the habitation door just doesn't clear the awning mechanism; being rare and special order only means these rooms take 8-10 weeks to obtain and naturally enough cost a bit more.

How to buy:  After reading the info here just find the page link below for your awning model - click on the link to go to a page dedicated to Residence for that awning model. On that page you can choose the length and height combination that suites your vehickle and so easily order the basic front+sides+hardware kit - plus options like curtains, windslip & rail, carrying bags, breathable groundsheet, etc.

Do I need any or all of the options?  A basic day room is simply a front and pair of sides. To make it fit you must choose the right awning model length and mounted height. To make a more comfortable and habitable room you might want more. Why a hold-down? To stop the room acting like a kite, it provides extra holding down power combined with elastic shock absorption to stop a blustery breeze from working the securing pegs out of the ground. We recommend the new sides kit - and also some of those screw-in dog anchors. Why a Windslip / Skirt?  It stops draughts, rabbits and cats from entering the room from under the 'van. We supply ours with glue-on fixing rail as long as ordered with a room. Wheelcover? Covers the wheel zone to stop draughts getting round the wheel and through the wheel arch. Front Connection Profiles? Figure of 8 plastic strips to join a front sunblocker e.g. to the supplied cord at the top of the Residence front panel. Why Curtains? Mostly for privacy for night use and also for changing but you might want to hide any camping equipment left there during the day. Why deluxe Storage Bags? More robust than the standard supply and not only tidy storage but also help to protect the room from accidental scuffs and other damage. Why a Breathable Groundsheet? To give some extra comfort over bare grass and to protect the grass from the effects of the groundsheet for as long as possible. Do I have to have the full kit? No you can opt for any combination you want. Why are no Curtains included in your prices this year? Thule's new curtains cost more than the ones previously supplied so some customers are opting to make their own using the included runners, the choice is yours. Why can't I fit this room to my Ducato / Sprinter  etc Van Conversion?  Residence is designed to fit to flat sided vehicles, it just doesn't seal to the curved sides on modern panel vans nor to curved sided Hobby Motorhomes.

Other Optional Extras:  Various rafters, awning lights and heaters. LED: LED lights are very much the in thing now with decent light but very little battery consumption. Various designs from spot to strip as left, some awnings now come with built in LED strip holders. Rafters: Tension rafters increase stability & rigidity and add a little fabric support on longer awnings. Third Support Leg: To reinforce the longer lengths of awning tents in combination with a tension rafter. Not for Quickfit nor 2000. Groundsheets are plainly not required by everyone but our breathable and grass-friendly versions are allowed on most campsites whereas non-breathable ones may not be.

Autotrail:  Motorcaravanning have long offered the Omnistor Safari-room and Thule-Residence to fit Autotrail recessed awnings and routinely put together kits containing special sides for Autotrail fitting. Fortunately that is no longer necessay - the latest G3 rooms fit later Autotrail fitted with 4900 Awnings. Earlier Autotrail had all sorts of problems and unfortunately Thule have now abandoned support for those so there is no longer a 'Safari-room' for pre-2012 build Autotrail.

Autotrail always had some complications: So just for reference now: They have used 5000-18 (2000-2002), 5500-18 (2000 - 2002), 5002-18 (2002 onwards), 5003-04 ( 2010-13) and 4900-13 (2012 onwards), all in a variety of sizes and even changing sizes. These are build years not registration years so you may need to look inside the awning box for extra information. The label on the back of the front rail is the easiest place to start. There was a particular problem with the 4.5m 5002 awnings fitted up to roughly 2010, because these had a smaller 2.25m projection and being recessed too are difficult/impossible even for blockers and Quickfit.

Note about fitting to different awnings:  Basically : The various G3 versions fit 4900/5003/5200 or 8000 or 6002/6200/6300 or 9200 : For 5002/5500 we supply '4900 sides' plus a 309623 transformation kit : For 5800 we '8000 sides' plus a 309623 transformation kit may be possible :

First fitting:  Some small DIY adjustments to fitting are required on first assembly but not when in daily use, do note that we strongly recommend assembly at home some time before you go away!

Videos:  You can watch an on-line YouTube Video by the manufacturer ThuleNV. They have two videos on line one showing erecting for the very first time and one dismantling again  Maybe you should ignore the many other private videos at least to begin with - could be very confusing!
