Coolers - Fridges - Cold-boxes - Cool-bags - what's the difference?  A very important question and one that affects both your choice and your pocket! 

• Traditional cooler bags or cool boxes are 'passive', that's to say you put cold food and drink and ice packs into them and the cool-bag's insulation keeps the content cool for a while by slowing down any heat transfer. In practice nothing is 'kept' cold but slowly and progressively heats up from very cold to just cool and then eventually to room temperature. The cheapest cool bags allow this in just a hour or so while the best, often called ice boxes, might keep ice for 5 days or more (as do our Max Cold range & superb Yeti Range).

• Active cooler boxes use 12/24/230v electricity to keep items cool for much longer. In practice a budget cool box will keep its internal temperature some 16-20º or so below the outside temperature, some a little more. Plainly performance in the 20-30º range depends on price and then your needs will depend on how hot it is outside the box. Bearing in mind that summers reach well up into the high 30s these days it often pays to pay a bit more if you don't want warm beer and sour milk!  (Temperatures inside cars go even higher of course).

• True mobile fridges do rather better than that and will usually hold their contents to a set temperature but again performance is dependent on cost and in this case also on the type of unit used. The ultra quiet units are absorption fridges and the portable versions of these tend to be less able to cope with extreme temperatures. The more robust travel fridges are compressor type and these will perform like your fridge at home holding temperatures at 4-5º even on very hot days. Compressor fridges also take much less out of your battery typically 2A instead of 8A but can't run on gas. Eze-Coolers:  These are quality cooler boxes from reputable manufacturers and are designed to be great for keep food and drink cool when travelling. Near essential in summer but remember that even in winter the interior of your car or motorhome will be quite warm so these can easily be year round products. Various models cool to approx 20º or 24º below ambient All can be powered with 12v - and 230v via an adapter - some are for 24v too.  All come with a 2 year warranty.  Ezetil Fridges:  These are rigid box mobile fridges with very quiet compressor operation, low power consumption on 12v or 24v typically 18W average for fridge temperatures, and thermostatic control from 10º down to -16/18/20ºC depending on model.
