New product for 2017 - Wifi Booster Kit:  (Gets good reviews online). Boost Caravan Site and other free or paid Wifi in your Caravan, Motorhome, Boat or Truck with ease. The Kuma WiFi package is a complete solution to pick up and boost an external WiFi signal and repeat it at full strength. This allows you to create your own secure wireless network in your caravan, motorhome or canal boat and share the boosted connection with all your devices. Everything you need to boost and share a motorhome WiFi connection is included. The Kuma kit only registers once even if serving multiple devices so in some places it can save you paying separately for each device!  The High-Powered Long Range Directional WiFi Antenna will pick up any available WiFi network as far away as 1.5km and the Kuma Wireless Repeater enables you to re-broadcast this boosted signal to your devices - all of which see the now strong local signal. Also included is a 5m USB cable to connect the antenna with the receiver, mounting kit, as well as 12v DC and 230v AC power supplies. NB: Directional aerials take a few seconds longer to set up but outperform omni-directional units every time!  This is of course an amplifier so if there's no signal available or it is being 'perimeter blocked' by the provider it can't 'magic one up' out of nowhere - but where there is a faint and unusable open signal it can pull it in at usable strength - amazing. There are quick start guides and spec sheets on the Kuma website or emailed on request. New - Booster Kit with 3G Dongle Buy below >>>

An optional extra feature set is provided with our own 3G dongle allowing access and sharing of a 3G mobile data connection when wifi isn't available. This does need a data sim and our own dongle - it is very unlikely to work with others!  Dongle coming soon.

Internet Access / Mobile Broadband on the move:  It used to be thought something of a luxury but many people now see it as an essential element in their lives. And not just Internet Access but Mobile Broadband performance levels too! All that is now possible both in the UK and abroad with relatively little fuss or cost in the more popular countries. Public WiFi is increasingly available albeit often unsecured and somewhat unreliable.  MiFi devices using 3G / 4G Cellphone data offer a private secured connection at modest cost. The Huawei 5377 MiFi in Black pictured right includes an informative screen and internal battery that is charged via USB or it can be powered via USB, it connects automatically. Our own preferred connection using 3's Feel at Home scheme when in Europe. Twin antenna sockets too. Hover mouse over pics for info.

Info & Tips Section:  There are choices as ever.   Satellite broadband is everyone's dream because it offers worldwide high bandwidth internet access pretty much wherever you are, the down side is the high capital cost and fairly high running costs.   At the other end of the cost scale is free Public WiFi. It's never quite fee of course you may have to pay to park or buy goods to get access or travel out of your way to find it. An aerial helps greatly with reception say on a campsite pitch a little way from the transmitter. The downsides are a lack of privacy & security in these open connections - never use it for banking!   In the middle ground there is the cellphone/mobile data solution. Outlay is modest for the devices and the running cost with both Monthly and PAYG options available. There's increasingly good performance over wide areas, all now supplemented by optional external aerial/s. European roaming is much, much, cheaper than it was, with no on-cost at all in some circumstances. The private and secured connection offered is increasingly important to many of us not least because professional villains and nerdy teenagers all seem keen to hack into anything they can see!  In MiFi form multiple devices are supported and secured. None of the 'tethering' issues that plague some phone contracts. Ideal for tablets and laptops and mixes well with phones - you can use it to access phone-data-cost-saving apps like Whatsap & SmartTalk & Skype even with data roaming turned off while abroad on your holidays so works with restricted phones/contracts like budget supermarket deals.  (if not of interest - click here to go straight to product info)

Do we communicate on the move ourselves? Yes we certainly do and have been doing so in various motorhomes at quite a serious level for most of this millennium. Serious in the sense that we use both personal and business email and web browsing including site page modification on a near daily basis both here in GB and also away in the motorhome in Europe. Public Wifi was, and is, initially very appealing for internet access because it's notionally free but we found too many drawbacks in practice and far from free if you need to detour and also buy product to get web access that may anyway be indifferent and insecure. (if not of interest - click here to go straight to product info)

These days our various Smart-devices also want to connect to the internet for an amazing range of services including everything from Whatsapp and Skype to Facebook & TV, from SatNav updates to Diesel, LPG, and Fiat Professional service locations, not to mention finding tourist info, aires, campsites, restaurants, NT & RSPB properties, news, weather forecasts, and more; it's all just part of everyday life now. Apps like Skype Whatsapp and SmartTalk save significant amounts of money while we're abroad too. With many restrictions on tethering smartphones we prefer to use a dedicated mifi data device. Most of my family are shocked if there's no shared internet in the camper these days, no matter where we are!

When away we need to be in touch with our business almost daily and often in a fairly intensive way - we receive hundreds of emails every day and also receive orders every day of the year except Christmas Day (so far!). Our colleagues are always at base of course, doing the 'donkey work', but we do still need regular, reliable, internet access with little in the way of data restriction - at least if & when we decide we need more data for a specific task. When working like this I prefer to use the comfortable office in our motorhome with everything to hand and not to be in or parked next to a McDonalds for hours on end!  Add to this the security and privacy concerns around dealing with customer data over an open public network and you can maybe see why we prefer to use our own private multi-device access via the cellphone network and a secured connection.

Many years ago when we first trialled it on a 'dongle' this technology was painfully slow and also painfully expensive in Europe but the advent of 3G Data and now 4G Data plus the convenience of multi-user mifi plus harmonised roaming rates in Europe have changed all that. Our first 3G was via a Data-only dongle with Vodaphone on a 10/day-used deal for, what was then, quite a lot of data. Then MiFis arrived and the deal reduced in price once the move towards unifying and reducing roaming rates got underway but 7-8/day-used was still normal.

Then our new friends 3 came along with their 'Feel at Home' deal - where you could use your UK Mifi Data allowance in France with no extra charge so just as if you were still back in the UK. Not only that but they promised to extend this to other countries too - almost too good to be true!  They were true to their promise too Feel-at-Home is now available in nineteen countries including eleven in Europe. Does it work? Yes, a resounding yes in fact. Our first trip on this scheme took us on a long and winding rural route almost to the Mediterranean and only once were we unable to get a 3G signal albeit there were just a few locations where low signal strength and slower data made life a little difficult - much on a par with back in the UK in fact. Reception was mostly excellent, especially with the MiFi device lodged in the roof vent. Now upgraded to 4G we find speeds are even better, genuinely 'mobile broadband' at last and 4G is now pretty widely available; where not 3G is the fall back of course.

We now use a monthly 5Gig SIM-only contract to cover most of our needs but also have a PAYG SIM that we swap to if running out of allowance and need more data temporarily (not often since upgrading to 5Gig/month), all this seems to work just fine. Can it get better? Yes add an aerial /antenna for a more reliable low hassle connection in marginal locations.

A good WiFi Antenna is of course just the thing for free wifi and this is a great solution for those wanting less critical internet access on campsites and other places offering pubic wifi so we also offer impressive temporary & installable wifi antennae. These wifi aerials will pick up signals at some considerable distance subject to obstacles and to some extent weather systems; there are reports from boats of a surprising range of 'many miles' to & from shore based wifi.  NB: the antenna for wifi and for 3/4G are different.

Hopefully all this helps understanding and importantly that we can offer customers appropriate help and good advice to those of you about to take the plunge or upgrade - and even some ongoing support too.

New for 2016 season:  Double cone antenna to make best use of the Huawei's twin aerial sockets (mimo). Full stocks around NEC time but can be ordered now with a 1-2 week lead time. We're using one ourselves.

Product Section: Take your tablets!  These days we expect access via multiple devices like tablets, smartphones, satnavs and tv as well as the traditional laptop - all using MiFi & WiFi hotspots whether on yachts, boats, cruisers, in motorhomes, caravans or canal boats or even temporary offices. The good news is that we can now supply long range Wifi systems, 3G and 4G MiFi devices and mobile routers plus Wifi and 3/4G antennas to satisfy these needs, all tried and tested on boats and motorhomes too. We've been using roaming data on a laptop ourselves for many years now in the UK & Ireland and in a lot of Europe too. More recently we've changed to Three MiFi using multiple devices - lots of valuable practical experience here!

Feel at Home deal from Three, where your 3G / 4G data usage while 'roaming' temporarily is simply part of your UK package and no longer carries a swingeing extra cost, has revolutionised the cost of mobile broadband abroad. It is already available in nineteen countries worldwide at the time of writing (Late 2015) including these ten gems in Europe - Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Norway, Republic of Ireland, Spain, Sweden & Switzerland. Roll on Germany and the Netherlands! Check out www.three.co.uk and search for 'feel at home', starting maybe with their Discover page. EE is a popular 4G provider too and now linked to T-Mobile & Orange so good coverage these days. They are quite difficult to create links to so just search for '4gee-wifi', their name for mobile broadband. Our Huawei Mifi is factory unlocked and will take our/any Three/EE SIM cards and works on many networks, most automatically but also configurable for rarer APNs like supermarket branded e.g. (do check your own deal though, not all allow roaming abroad!).

MiFi / WiFi ??  Most devices are wifi in some way these days but there is a big difference between the open public Wifi services that are by their very nature very insecure and the secure private access via a SIM-enabled* device that offers your own private hotspot using encrypted data, these devices are often called MiFi. Standard advice is never use open Wifi for banking, on-line purchasing, or anything where your security is important!  A 'free' wifi connection could prove very costly indeed in these circumstances!  It can be great however for TV as long as you can get unlimited and unthrottled data, not often the case now unfortunately. With data now so cheap and external aerials so efficient we can all enjoy the benefits of private mobile broadband. *SIM-enabled = like a mobile phone but for data only, similar to picture top, or a router.

Boats versus Motorhomes?  Often not much different really, our 4G antenna are most often black and magnetic on canal boats but the same may be true of PVCs/Campervans. Yachts and Cruisers are more often non-ferrous and frequently white so very similar to motorhomes and so taking white aerials / antennae permanently mounted or temporarily placed on the roof. Seafaring people take their communications very seriously but motorhomers are often using the same weather information and news from family and friends - albeit their lives don't depend on it!  Watching a favourite UK TV programme when out of normal satellite range is increasingly common in both sectors - as long as you've got a great UK-made aerial to pull that signal in!

Antennae:  With public Wifi and private MiFi providers well established, the Antenna seem to be the hot topic right now. There are two distinct product ranges, one for extra WiFi range and the other to enhance the 3G-4G signal strength for Mifi or 4G Routers. Combined units don't really exist though we do expect to have a Glomex roof 'pod' available for 2016 that contains both devices in a single box.

WiFi Antennae, the better ones, are normally longish slim fold-down poles mounted on a foot for roof mounting or on a clamp to go round a rail. On motorhomes they are often fitted near a vent for example so the existing wood reinforcement around the vent can be used to fix into, it's also fairly easy in that position to raise and lower the folding-base antenna from inside the vehicle. The lead can be bright through the roof using a normal cable entry box and Sikaflex; some users bring the cable in though the vent using the soft rubber seal's flexibility. Some antennae are magnetic for temporary fixing. It is of course possible to fix small ferrous plates to a motorhome roof with Sikafex and then use them as a base for a magnetic unit.

MiFi Antennae are much more compact ranging from simple low mini-domes to the more usual compact cones. The very popular Cones are about 50mm diameter and 80-150mm tall as picture right and upper left (not to scale!), they have higher gain than domes. Taller cones may be on a small stand / extension and this may offer some advantage on a crowded roof to clear vents, solar panels, etc. Domes are to order only and are about 35mm high and 100-110mm diameter and come as magnetic base or through-roof as pictures right. Choices for both are magnetic or fixed base and black or white colour plus a number of ways to get the cable into the van including an optional cable entry box. A twin-aerial-lead dome is likely to become available in 2016; although theoretically better our experts tell us that cellnet providers don't often offer anything that the twin aerials can make good use of, at least not on every mast, also that where this is provided two spaced out antenna would be a better set-up.
