How do I choose?  Choosing an inverter is fairly simple but there are limitations. In principle you just add up the 'wattage' you want to connect at one time and that's the size you need. In practice it's slightly more complicated because 'you don't get ought for nought'. This means you have to pay for the 20x gain in volts by providing 20x more amps. As a result a 1Kw Inverter will draw maybe 90 amps at full power - that's a lot of amps and that means big cables, efficient cooling of all the heat generated, and a rather rapidly flattened battery!  As long as you understand and manage all those issues, these are extremely useful items for short term use or for when the engine is running and the alternator is providing all those extra amps. An important characteristic to look for is a high surge tolerance for 'starting' things like air-con units - these powerful Ring inverters are very well specified with a double capacity surge capability (more on the 3000!).

12v Electrical Cable:  Automotive & equipment wire / wiring / cable. Whenever I've done electrical work on our motorhome I've always struggled to find cable supplies somewhere between professional length rolls and those hideously expensive short lengths you find in motor accessory shops!  So here are our best efforts - 30m & 50m rolls of reasonably priced cable / wire in a variety of ratings to suit everything from adding a light to running a bigger inverter or upgrading or installing an extra battery. Single or twin reels in red & black pvc sheathing only, the twins are in black outers and are in very handy lengths for smaller jobs. For our Solar panels we recommend a minimum of 2x 2.5mm for short runs and 2x 3mm or even 4-4.5mm for longer runs. For the best performance use 6mm - the biggest you can use with standard easy connectors. Although the charging current will only be a fraction of the cable capacity these larger cables have less voltage drop over distance and therefore maximise the charge actually reaching the battery - this will be of most benefit when you need it most - when charging is poor - in winter e.g.  Buy Now >>>
