New: CTEK Battery to Battery Charging with integrated Solar MPPT Option. The excellent new D250S Allows two DC power inputs - for example solar panel plus alternator and automatically selects the input giving the most power. It uses MPPT technology for maximum solar input under lower light conditions and also provides solar overspill to the starter battery to keep that well maintained too. Conveniently it works just fine even without a solar panel! With CTEK's usual top class multi stage charging and continuous output up to 20A it gives fast charging of the leisure batteries, and longer battery life too. Equally important this is part of a system so by adding a Smartpass it is possible to boost the maximum B2B charge up to 80 Amps. Standby Chargers: Devices to top up a secondary battery or battery bank once the main one is up to strength. The overspill charge is typically 2-3A maximum. In motorhomes these usually keep the starter battery topped up while the leisure batteries are connect to mains hook-up or solar power or even generator. No user input is required once installed it just automatically sends any surplus charging to the 'secondary' battery to counter the usual laid-up self-discharge and the current taken by alarms, radios, etc. Can also be used where there are two separated leisure batteries. Installation is straightforward with relatively lightweight cabling - the clever bit is in the electronics not the installation! PDF Instructions on request.
Sterling Auxiliary Battery Charger 3A: This battery charger/maintainer enables an extra battery bank to be kept 'topped up' from the main battery bank which has the charging device/s connected to it (alternator, mains charger, solar cells or wind power etc). The battery charger/maintainer works by detecting when the main battery bank being charged reaches 13.3V and then allows the excess power to be sent to the extra battery bank with only a minor voltage drop of 0.2V. This maintains the extra battery bank by charging it with several amps. A battery at rest is around 12.7v max so no current flows out of the leisure battery if there's no incoming charge, perfect. Votronic Standby Charger 2A also know as a 'Battery Master': Flat vehicle battery after standing a few weeks? Vehicle batteries discharge over time and things like alarm systems and radios on standby discharge them too. Not noticeable on a car in regular use but a 100mA alarm will discharge a typical static vehicle battery in about 3-4 weeks! All this is inevitable there's nothing you can do about it To solve the problem some extra external charging is needed either via solar and/or hook-up. Sterling Combined Inverter / Charger: Previously a very high cost product reserved only for luxury vehicles Sterling have smashed through the price barrier with these remarkable combined units. Sterling Battery to Battery Charger (B2B Charger): Yes it sounds odd but this is a remarkable piece of kit. It is extremely easy to install and uses electronic wizardry to multi step-charge the leisure battery with surplus alternator output via a simple connection to the vehicle battery. It does this remarkably quickly and efficiently and at the same time puts in significantly more charge than any standard in-vehicle system achieves! Normally a fully charged starter battery signals the alternator to cut back its output and so starves the leisure batteries to some extent. This remarkable unit overcomes that as described below. Clever electronics keep everything under control ensuring batteries are always well cared for and recharging is remarkably quick. The difference between cheap and expensive battery chargers: The way a battery is charged can make a huge difference to its performance and useful life. Simple, low-cost chargers will just boost the battery at a constant voltage without taking into account its overall condition. The battery will never be fully charged and, if there should be anything wrong with it, such as a faulty cell, it could be seriously damaged. More expensive chargers such as CTEK or Sterling IUoU models use sophisticated circuitry to vary the charging current according to the battery’s requirements (multi-stage charging), ensuring that it stores the maximum power possible. Unlike some cheap units, they can be safely left connected to the battery indefinitely. Even batteries that are being constantly charged by an on-board charger can benefit greatly from a regular session on an IUoU charger. Sterling are a Queens Award Company. It is especially important to have a top notch charger with higher capacity battery banks and where the charging-discharging pattern is poor - long periods out of use, deep discharging, generator top-ups, etc. - our lifestyle is noted for ruining batteries!
How to choose which size of battery charger is required: For optimum performance a normal battery charger should have a minimum output power of around 10% of the battery’s Ah rating. For example, a battery with a 100 Amp/hour rating benefits from use of a charger which is rated at least 10 Amps. Using a 7 Amp model won’t do any harm, it just won’t work as efficiently and will take longer to charge the battery. We'd say 5% (1/20th) is the minimum usable ratio - so a 4.3A charger for an 85Ahr battery for example. A 20 Amp or even bigger model will of course work perfectly well as long as the output is properly regulated - as is the case with all these better quality chargers.
Whatever your charging system remember the old adage "A bigger piggy bank only gives you more money if you fill it first"! Our best advice for reliable mobile power is to add extra batteries first but don't scrimp on the charger, a good one fills faster and gives longer battery life too !
